Made-to-drawing nuts are manufactured when the standard solutions available on the market are not sufficient to meet the technical requirements of the application. Non-standard dimensions, particular geometries, special materials, dedicated treatments or specific assembly requirements may require the production of fully customized components.
In many industrial sectors, the nut is not simply an accessory of the fastening system, but a component designed together with the screw, stud or pin to ensure mechanical performance, safety and long-term durability.
For this reason, EFS supports the supply of special made-to-drawing nuts through a network of qualified Italian and European manufacturers, selected according to the required machining operations and the characteristics of the project.
Types of Special Nuts That Can Be Manufactured
The customization possibilities are very broad and may involve geometries, materials, surface treatments and documentation requirements.
The most commonly requested types include special hex nuts, flanged nuts, self-locking nuts, square nuts, extension nuts, coupling nuts and components developed entirely according to the customer’s drawing.
Machining operations may include turning, milling, drilling, lightening operations, dedicated markings, special metric or inch threads and non-standard dimensions not available in commercial fasteners.
Materials and Coatings
Material selection is one of the most important aspects in the design of a special nut.
EFS can support supplies in carbon steels, high-strength alloy steels, A2 and A4 stainless steels, ASTM materials for Oil & Gas applications, Duplex, Super Duplex, Inconel, Hastelloy and other alloys intended for critical applications.
Surface treatments can also be defined according to the operating environment and the required performance. The most commonly used include electrolytic zinc plating, hot-dip galvanizing, Geomet®, zinc-nickel coating, electroless nickel plating, phosphating and black oxide treatment.
In particularly demanding applications, the surface treatment can play a decisive role in corrosion protection and in the overall durability of the connection.
EFS Capabilities
EFS manages supplies of made-to-drawing nuts for sectors such as machinery, energy, Oil & Gas, railway, heavy-duty automotive, cement plants, offshore and industrial plant engineering.
The activity includes technical support in material selection, coordination of machining operations, management of surface treatments and quality controls required by the order.
On request, EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificates, dimensional inspections, mechanical testing and full raw material traceability can be provided.
This section presents some examples of special nuts manufactured by EFS for specific industrial applications, showing the different customization possibilities offered by made-to-drawing production.
