According to the periodic report “Monitor of Districts” of July 2019, published by Intesa San Paolo, in Lombardy thirteen district realities out of the twenty-three monitored recorded a drop in exports, among them Instrumental Mechanics of Bergamo (-16.7%), a drop due to the crisis of the first trade outlet represented by Germany. At the same time, however, the good performance of two metal-mechanics districts (Metalmeccanico del basso mantovano +8.6 percent and Meccanica strumentale di Varese +7.3 percent) should be noted, thanks to the pull of the United States and China.
According to the “Industrial Sectors Analysis Report October 2019” published by Prometeia and Intesa San Paolo, the top sector of Italian industry, Mechanics, is expected to continue along a moderate growth path (+1.3 percent on average for the year in 2020-21, at constant prices), incorporating a less toned-down evolution of the capital goods investment cycle by Italian companies, compared to the recent past, only partly offset by export growth.
