According to the periodic surveys conducted by UCR (Unioncamere, Confindustria Lombardia, Lombardy Region) and Bank of Italy on the performance of regional economies, the mechanical engineering sector achieved 5.3 percent growth during 2018 compared to the previous year, higher than the average (3.4 percent) of other manufacturing sectors.
In the first nine months of the year, manufacturing output increased in all business size classes. The increase in exports affected almost all industries. Among the main exporting sectors, expansion was particularly strong in metallurgy, transport equipment and leather goods and footwear, which together contributed more than 75 percent of overall sales growth (including chemical-pharmaceuticals and mechanical engineering).
