Rectangular head screws for industrial plants: a compact and effective solution

In the plant engineering industry, the choice of fasteners has a major impact on the efficiency, safety and durability of the plant itself. Rectangular head screws are a popular solution where space is limited and reliable tightening is critical.

Among the most widely used solutions, AISI 304 stainless steel screws with parallelogram heads stand out for their versatility, ease of assembly, and resistance in medium-aggressive environments.

Be careful not to confuse them with hammer screws-their particular geometry is designed to optimize mechanical sealing in specific contexts such as T-rails, modular profiles, and electrical panels.

Technical characteristics of the vine

The screw described here has an M8 x 20 shank with a parallelogram (improperly called “rectangular”) head made of AISI 304 stainless steel. The dimensions of the head are 21 mm x 9.2 mm, with a height of 6 mm. Laser marking enables permanent identification of the material, facilitating traceability according to the requirements of many industrial orders.

AISI 304 (X5CrNi18-10) stainless steel belongs to the A2 (nickel-chromium) family of steels, which also includes AISI 303, AISI 304L and AISI 305. It is a steel widely used in the food, chemical, and plant engineering industries that, in its solution annealed state, is characterized by corrosion resistance to numerous substances.
While not as resistant as AISI 316 (A4) to highly corrosive environments, AISI 304 provides an excellent compromise between cost, machinability, and corrosion resistance in standard environments.

Typical applications

Parallelogram head screws find use in a variety of areas:

  • Electrical panels on ships, trains, industrial plants
  • Photovoltaic panels, for mounting on structural profiles
  • Industrial machinery in technical and/or semi-aggressive environments
  • Modular brackets and supports, such as T-rails or technical conduits.

Advantages of rectangular head screws for industrial plants

Rectangular or parallelogram head screws have many advantages.

First is the possibility of quick insertion and automatic locking, without the need for disassembly or complex operations. The head slides into the guide and rotates to lock. This provides a secure hold even in very small spaces.

In addition, the rectangular head screws provide a large bearing surface without exceeding the shank size too much. This allows optimal distribution of the clamping load, prevents deformation and ensures stable fastening.

Note that the custom screws made by EFS to order are not properly rectangular. The head shape is inclined (parallelogram), which further reduces the risk of accidental unscrewing due to vibration or micromovement, a frequent condition in electrical panels or moving machinery.

Finally, ease of use results in reduced assembly time, a feature especially appreciated in overhead installations or construction sites with limited accessibility.

Reference Standards

There is no standard regulating parallelogram head screws since they are components made to drawings. In any case, design and production must comply with basic references such as:

  • ISO 898-1 for mechanical properties of carbon and alloy steel bolts
  • ISO 3506-1 for properties of stainless steel fasteners
  • EN ISO 4762 / 4017, if referring to the standard threaded body
  • For industrial plants, the PED Directive 2014/68/EU, which requires traceability and compliant materials for pressure systems, may be relevant.

In many cases, especially in plant and shipbuilding, they are required:

  • A permanent marking of the material used (such as the laser marking visible in the photo)
  • The statement of compliance with the requirements of the job order or
  • possible compliance with the industry directive.

Conclusions

These rectangular head screws are not products available in the catalog: EFS has made them to drawing and to order, adapting to the customer’s needs. This approach allows geometries to be optimized based on the mounting interface, profile thicknesses, and environmental conditions.

In the plant engineering industry, where every detail can make a difference, having a fastener that simplifies installation and improves tightness even in cramped environments is a real competitive advantage.
