More specifically, the projects involved <strong>two large-size special fasteners<\/strong>, both subjected to post heat-treatment impact testing and protected with Geomet 500B coating.<\/p>\n<p>The images also show two different production stages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>fasteners before surface coating, ready for tensile and impact testing<\/li>\n<li>inspected fasteners returned after Geomet\u00ae 500B coating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first project involved a quenched and tempered 42CrMo4 fastener for offshore applications; the second concerned a large-size class 10.9 special fastener for shipbuilding and structural applications.<\/p>\n<p>As with all special fastener supplies,<strong> EFS coordinated the entire project<\/strong>: selection of qualified manufacturers, laboratory inspections, surface treatments, dimensional controls and full batch traceability.<br \/>\nEFS operates as project manager for custom-made fasteners and is <strong>certified by T\u00dcV S\u00dcD<\/strong> according to ISO 9001:2015.<\/p>\n<h2>42CrMo4 Fasteners with Geomet\u00ae 500B for Offshore Cranes<\/h2>\n<p>The first case concerns special fasteners for offshore applications. EFS managed a supply consisting of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UNI 5737 M42 x 440 bolts<\/li>\n<li>Quenched and tempered 42CrMo4 material<\/li>\n<li>Geomet\u00ae 500B coating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNI 5737 bolts<\/strong> are hex head fasteners with partially threaded shank, commonly used in heavy structural steelwork, port structures, cranes and lifting systems.<\/p>\n<p>In offshore environments, they are frequently employed in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>marine cranes<\/li>\n<li>port infrastructures<\/li>\n<li>handling systems<\/li>\n<li>steel structures exposed to salt atmosphere<\/li>\n<li>applications subjected to vibration and cyclic loading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why 42CrMo4 is used<\/h2>\n<p>42CrMo4 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel widely used in <strong>heavy mechanical <\/strong>and <strong>highly stressed structural applications.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After quenching and tempering, this material provides:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>high mechanical strength<\/li>\n<li>good toughness<\/li>\n<li>excellent fatigue behaviour<\/li>\n<li>reliable performance under dynamic loading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For this reason, it is commonly selected for offshore applications where fastening systems must maintain long-term reliability under continuous vibration and severe mechanical stress.<\/p>\n<h2>Impact testing at -40\u00b0C \u2265 42 Joules<\/h2>\n<p>After heat treatment, the batch was subjected to Charpy impact testing with the following requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>test temperature: -40\u00b0C<\/li>\n<li>required average value: \u2265 42 Joules<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The test measures the <strong>energy absorbed by the material before fracture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In offshore applications, toughness is a critical parameter because low temperatures may increase the <strong>risk of brittle failure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Impact testing therefore confirms that the material maintains adequate toughness even under severe environmental conditions.<\/p>\n<h2>M39 Class 10.9 Fasteners with Geomet 500B for Shipyards<\/h2>\n<p>The second project managed by EFS involved:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UNI 5737 M39 x 580 bolts<\/li>\n<li>Class 10.9<\/li>\n<li>Geomet\u00ae 500B coating<\/li>\n<li>Post heat-treatment impact testing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This was a <strong>non-standard special fastener<\/strong> both in diameter and, above all, in its <strong>580 mm length.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These geometries are typically used in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>shipyards<\/li>\n<li>structural steelwork<\/li>\n<li>cranes and lifting systems<\/li>\n<li>heavy-duty steel structure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What property class 10.9 means<\/h2>\n<p>Property class 10.9 identifies high-strength fasteners according to ISO 898-1.<\/p>\n<p>This class is selected when fastening systems must withstand:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>high static loads<\/li>\n<li>dynamic stresses<\/li>\n<li>vibrations<\/li>\n<li>significant tightening loads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Class 10.9 fasteners are normally <strong>quenched and tempered <\/strong>to achieve the correct balance between strength and toughness.<\/p>\n<p>For oversized dimensions such as those involved in this project, production process control becomes even more critical.<\/p>\n<h2>Challenges of long-size fasteners<\/h2>\n<p>Special fasteners with non-standard dimensions, particularly in length, introduce additional manufacturing and inspection challenges.<\/p>\n<p>During production, the following parameters must be carefully monitored:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>straightness<\/li>\n<li>heat-treatment consistency<\/li>\n<li>thread quality<\/li>\n<li>dimensional tolerances<\/li>\n<li>surface coating uniformity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Geomet\u00ae coating itself must maintain consistent thickness along the entire fastener in order to avoid assembly issues or uneven performance.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, EFS coordinates the entire supply process as technical project manager, selecting qualified manufacturers and specialised partners for every production stage.<\/p>\n<h2>Geomet \u00ae 500B: advantages for offshore and marine sectors<\/h2>\n<p>Geomet\u00ae 500B is a water-based zinc-flake coating developed for applications requiring high corrosion resistance.<\/p>\n<p>In offshore and marine sectors, it represents a reliable alternative to traditional zinc plating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compared to conventional galvanising, it:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>does not introduce hydrogen<\/li>\n<li>reduces the risk of hydrogen embrittlement<\/li>\n<li>provides more uniform coating thickness<\/li>\n<li>offers high corrosion resistance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Compared to other zinc-flake systems<\/strong>, Geomet\u00ae 500B provides:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>longer service life in marine environments<\/li>\n<li>improved long-term stability<\/li>\n<li>good friction coefficient repeatability<\/li>\n<li>effective protection even on complex geometries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For these reasons, it is widely used on special
